Fellowes SB-99Ci Shredder Review

!±8± Fellowes SB-99Ci Shredder Review

I recently purchased a Fellowes sb-99Ci shredder from an office supply company. It was on sale for 9. I will use the shredder for medium volume shredding at my Houston Texas insurance and mortgage business.

This model is advertised as a heavy duty shredder that can handle up to 17 sheets per pass. Cutting is cross-cut which is better for security than strips. Cross-cut also allows the waste bucket to hold more. There is a jam proof feature that prevents jams by not running if too many pages are inserted. I found this feature often prevents the shredder from running for more than 14 sheets. The manual states that the anti-jam feature can be switched off by pressing a combination of keys. However I was not able to switch the anti-jam feature off.

The shredder being replaced was rated at 16 sheets compared to 17 for the sb-99Ci. However this machine is significantly more powerful than the sheet rating would indicate. Paper moves through the cutter in about 4 seconds which is noticeably faster than my previous machine. It feeds larger stacks of waste effortlessly, while the previous machine slowed and struggled to cut 8 sheets or more. Cutting is also relatively quiet for this machine. I believe that the "heavy duty" claim for this shredder is real and not just marketing hype.

Other features include a 9 gallon waste bucket, castor wheels, a window to see the waste level, and a "safe sense" feature that prevents starting when fingers are in the cutting slot. There is also a two year warranty which is more than you get for most shredders.

I have had about 8 shredders for my insurance and mortgage business so far. Each time I get a better machine as the limitations of lesser machines become apparent. This machine is easily the best so far (and most expensive). From my experience I suggest getting a better machine than you think you need. For example if you think you need a light duty 5 sheet model, get a 10 sheet medium duty cutter instead. Don't just compare the sheet capacity. Read the reviews and get something good that will last. For 1 to 3 users, and light to moderate volume, I think you would be happy with the Fellowes sb-99Ci model.
